Justine Skye Returns to NYC for the "ULTRAVIOLET" Tour
This past Saturday, at SOB's, the Purple Unicorn returned home for the New York City stop of her "ULTRAVIOLET" tour. It was Justine Skye's fourth stop on her tour, in support of her debut album of the same name.
In our FM² post, I named Skye as one of the new age female megastars. So to begin, I always noticed Skye and that was mainly because one of my of closest friends has been a diehard Justine supporter since the Tumblr days. For me, it was not until I heard "I'm Yours" featuring Vic Mensa that I really started to pay close attention to her. Then "Jezebel" followed, followed by "Back For More, featuring Jeremih, and it was at that point that I became apart of the Unicorn Nation.
I was so happy when she announced the tour dates because I missed her free concert at the Apple store in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, back in January. I purchased my ticket right away and then later a meet-and-greet.
I arrived at SOB's shortly after 7pm. I thought I was late but I was able to get close enough to the stage which was all I needed. Trevor Jackson was the opening act. I was not too familiar with Jackson until I recently started watching Grown-ish. He hit the stage about 9pm and performed a handful of the songs off of his recently released album, 'Rough Drafts, Pt. 1.' There is no doubt this young man is the full package. He's extremely talented with his vocals, dancing and guitar playing skills. He had the crowd's full attention with his cover of Ed Sheeran's "Perfect."
Jackson left the stage before the lights dimmed for Justine's set. An introduction blared over the speakers as her two dancers walked onto the stage followed by the purple angel herself. An artist's first appearance on the stage is always important because it is a measure of a performer's stage presence. It's a special formula of lights, vocals, timing and when the performer actually becomes visually present. Justine definitely passed that test. Donning a high ponytail, a YSL choker and a pants suit, something similar to a Janet Jackson get-up, Skye immediately proceeded into the first song "Wasteland," lifted from her debut album. A smooth transition into my personal favorite, "Back For More," followed. She then removed her blazer to reveal a corset top and then later changed into a pair of metallic cargo pants.
She brought the energy and emotion as she became teary-eyed feeling all of the love the crowd gave to her. Her set lasted for an hour and she performed all of my favorite songs from "Heaven" to "Push Ya." Well, there was one song she did not perform that I absolutely love and that was "Jezebel." That's okay because she put on quite a show.
After the set ended those of us who had a meet-and-greet stayed while the other folks vacated the building. There were two lines; there was one for Trevor and one for Justine. When I tell you I was surprised at the amount of people that waited for Trevor in comparison to Justine... Those ladies wanted some Jackson... I came for Justine, heck I even wore purple just for her. She arose from the basement in her "ULTRAVIOLET" sweatsuit ready to autograph our t-shirts and take a photo. We shared a few words and a quick embrace before posing it up for a photo. Oh yes, I might sound redundant at this point but the lady is damn stunning and so incredibly gorgeous.
The crazy thing about concerts is there is always so much lead up time then it's over with the snap of a finger. I had a great night and then made the trek back uptown to get some much needed sleep. Justine, keep rising lady, you are a star.
