Piff Marti Live at SOB's: Ascending Into 2019
It is not often that I am able to witness talent from the very early stages but when I do it feels like I’m about to be apart of something great even if I’m just a supporter. That is what happened last week at SOB’s when Piff Marti took to the stage for his headlining set.
Who is Piff Marti? Well let me fill you in. I have known the Bronx born and Harlem bred rapper for a few years but we were acquainted in another form. I knew Piff by his government name and in a professional setting. Despite this formal environment, there was always something musical about Marti. It wasn’t too long after that I found out that he was indeed a gifted creative. One, he recently received honors for playwrighting and two, he released his debut album ‘Lucid’ in May of 2018 across all streaming platforms. Piff also just dropped the video for “Clocking Out” just a few days ago. Check it out below:
Work and school just happened to be the obstacle that stood in between me and one his performances. Finally, I just had to sacrifice the sleep, go and checkout this amazing talent; it was damn worth it.
I arrived at SOB’s at 9:30pm that night. Piff had a scheduled set time of 10pm but did not hit the stage until about 11:30pm. That’s alright, I took in the many opening acts and had a ball seeing all this fresh new talent storm the stage, some as solo acts and some accompanied by their entourage. I’m looking at all of them knowing that they are all hungry to acquire the success that they’ve seen their peers obtain.
he DJ then shouted into to the microphone, “Please welcome to the stage, Piff Marti!” The audience was scattered but all of a sudden a rush of people walked up to the stage. I said to myself, “Damn Piff, you have an allegiance of loyals out here for you tonight.” We erupted with cheer as the casually dressed rapper stepped onto the stage with blazing energy. I keep referring to him as a rapper but make no mistake, this talent is an all around performer. He blessed us with six of his songs:
Itis
Represent
Clockout
Candy Paint
Why Me
Do You Know?
I usually listen to the ‘Lucid’ album when I’m in a state to just vibe out or when I’m actually interested in actually listening to lyrics of a song. Piff’s performance that night brought a new surge of energy to these songs. He turned his songs into club bangers; he had everyone rocking. I was looking around at the reactions of the audience and I remember there were a few people you could tell who only saw Piff Marti live for the first time. Their faces expressed impressed leading them to pull out their phones to record video.
“Do You Know” was the perfect light vibe to close out his set as we all cheered in applause for Marti’s stage exit. All I could remember thinking, post-performance, this guy has all the potential to make it big. I was able to quickly catch-up with him after the show. He stated:
I have an entirely new respect and admiration for Piff Marti’s art. I personally feel he will continue to be on the up from here on out and I look forward to see all the accomplishments he grips and takes for himself. Piff Marti for the win!
